Joseph John Banick Obituary

Joseph John Banick, 87, of Dunmore, died Thursday evening at Geisinger-Community Medical Center in Scranton.

Born in Scranton, son of the late William and Frances Pavliga Banick, he was a graduate of Dunmore High School and obtained the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees from the University of Scranton.  He was a teacher of high school math in Riverside, NJ for 30 years.  After his retirement from teaching, he tutored students within the surrounding area in New Jersey, and more recently continued being a tutor at the Education Enrichment Institute at the IHM Center in Scranton.  Before its closing, he was a devoted parishioner of the Holy Family Church in Scranton, where he served in the ministries of cantor, acolyte, and communion minister.  At the pastor’s request, he often would drive elderly parishioners home after Mass, and he would also bring Holy Communion from the parish to the sick and elderly.

He is survived by his siblings, Sister Dolores M. Banick, IHM, of Dunmore; Carol Banick Mummert of Vista, CA; Monsignor Thomas V. Banick of Dunmore, Pastor Emeritus of the Church of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Wilkes-Barre; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Banick Boland, and brothers Bernard, Robert, and Dr. William Banick.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. by his brother, Msgr. Thomas V. Banick, in the IHM Center Chapel, 2300 Adams Ave., Scranton.

Family and friends may pay their respects at the chapel from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass.

It is recommended that all attending wear a mask.

Interment will be held for the family at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.
