James M. O’Neill, Jr., 80, of Dunmore, died Saturday afternoon at the Allied Services Hospice Center in Scranton. He and his wife, the former Mary Ann DePietro, celebrated 54 years of marriage on May 17th.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late James and Mary Joyce O’Neill. He was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Scranton and also attended Lackawanna Junior College. He was a member of SS. Anthony & Rocco Parish in Dunmore. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, and prior to retirement, he had been employed at Tobyhanna Army Depot.
Jim was a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather who absolutely adored his grandchildren. They were the love of his life. He was always in attendance at his grandchildren’s sporting events and dance recitals. He was a volunteer coach for the Dunmore Little League as well as the Schautz Teener League. He will always be remembered as the trusted handyman for all his family and friends.
Also surviving are two sons, James A. O’Neill and his wife Nicole, Scranton and Jeffrey O’Neill and his wife Gina, Dunmore, four grandchildren, Connor, Chase, Mia and Gianna O’Neill, three sisters-in-law, Theresa O’Neill, Janet McHale and her husband John, Donna Manley and her husband Don, a brother-in-law, Thomas DePietro, his aunt Angela Lorince, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William O'Neill, in February of this year.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith Street, Dunmore. Interment to follow in Dunmore Cemetery.
Family and friends may call Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 East Drinker St., Dunmore. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution in Jim’s memory to the donor’s favorite charity.
